- In article <4l6i6p$78t@hg.oro.net>, estarry@oro.net says...
- -
- - An interesting side effect with connections where *BOTH* modems are using
- -properly configured ESP's is what happens to zip/gif files. You will have to
- -find this secret out on your own. <g>
- -
-
- If you knew anything about compression algorithms, you would know that
- increasing the dictionary size of v.42bis still does not put it in the same
- league as ZIP and etc. You will not see higher transfer rates with these
- types of files than the bit rate of your modem.
-
- -PS: An 'Enhanced V.42bis' modem is a modem that compresses at a 8 to 1
- -ratio and they require an (E)nhanced (S)erial (P)ort to run at full speed.
- -Yes 8 to 1 compressing modems, contrary to what others tell you, do exist
- -and they will work as designed if set up properly.
- -
-
- 4:1 with v.42bis is theoretical, not typical.... doubling the dictionary size
- and DTE rate do not make the guts of the compression process twice as
- efficient, especially when you don't use BS test files specifically designed
- by HAYES for their BS tests.
-
- If you expect us to listen, give us test results on "real world" files that
- we can compare with our own setups. Until you do this, we will continue to
- think that you are a misinformed windbag.
-
- Since you're so sure of yourself, go ahead and take John's challenge. With
- the "real world" files that we transfer 99% of the time, the ESP does nothing
- more than prevent overruns with MSWindows.

-
- P.S. If you really read Comp. Magazines, why don't you look up modem tests
- using two-way transfers, compressed files, and HAYES with ESP/s on both sides
- of the connection.... they do NOT have 230kbps DTE.
